Each year International Waffle Day falls on the 25th March. On this day those who like to celebrate the day will usually do this by eating lots of waffles. Waffles are eaten all over the world and are particularly popular in Belgium and France. Waffles are also popular in America, however in the United States National Waffle Day is celebrated later on in the year, on the 24th August.

Waffles come in many different formats and can be eaten as sweet or savoury waffles. This is very similar to croissants and pancakes which can be eaten with sweet or savoury fillings. Generally waffles are served with butter melted on them, but can also be served with fruit and ice-cream as more of a dessert.

Waffles are made with a batter, similar to a pancake batter, that is then poured into a waffle maker or a waffle iron which then defines the shape of a typical waffle, which is usually a grid-like shape.

Waffles are a popular food type for breakfast or a light snack, as people can top them with whatever they like whether it be a sprinkling of sugar, butter, fruit or jam. Some may like to add a filling in between two waffles and eat the waffle like a sandwich.

Waffle Cones

Waffle cones are usually made out of wafer, but have the same texture as a waffle and are made in a similar way, but are thinner and rolled into a cone like shape. There are various waffle cones, from plain ones to ones that are dipped in chocolate and sprinkles. They also come in different shapes from small to large to even double coned.

Waffle cones are used to serve ice-cream in so that people can eat an ice-cream with ease by simply holding the waffle cone, without needing anything else to eat it with. The individual can then eat the cone afterwards. Waffle cones are a great invention as they will rarely let any ice-cream out and do not soak up the ice-cream either.

Potato Waffles

Potato waffles are served with savoury meals and dishes. Most of the time potato waffles are bought in supermarkets in the frozen section. They can then be cooked in the oven, on the grill or fried. Potato waffles are popular in Britain and are mainly served with meals such as a full English breakfast or foods that are often in that meal such as beans, eggs, sausages and bacon.
